Thank you, Dr. Laney
For no particular reason, I have been averse to going on a statin, even though my total cholesterol has always been high, as has my LDL cholesterol. On an office visit a couple of years ago, when I was 76 y.o., I went to see Dr. Laney for an annual exam. As he normally did, Dr. Laney discussed my elevated cholesterol and increased risk of coronary artery disease, even though I had no cardiac symptoms. During that discussion, he mentioned that my recent cholesterol testing showed I had an abnormal LDL/HDL ratio, and for this reason he advised me to have a coronary calcium scan.
I have grown to trust Dr. Laney's advice, since I know he is always informed about the latest scientific studies in Internal Medicine, so I had the coronary calcium scan and learned that the result was quite elevated. I ended up seeing a cardiologist, having a coronary angiogram which showed < 50% blockage of my right coronary artery, and being placed on two cholesterol lowering medications. As a result, my LDL cholesterol is now well below the recommended level, and I am confident that Dr. Laney's advice has probably lowered my risk of having a cardiac-related event in the future.
