I have known Dr. DeAtkine since he came to Birmingham, AL and joined an internist group. My mother became one of his first patients as she was diabetic as well as other serious health problems. She lived with me the last eleven or so years of her life, making me very aware of her physical needs and the care she was receiving from Dr. DeAtkine.
When Dr. DeAtkine left the internist group and became affiliated with MDVIP, Mother followed. I, too, became his patient. I think we signed up the first time membership was available. I have never looked back. I feel very fortunate to be his patient.
Before I leave discussing Dr. DeAtkine and my mom I want to emphasize the exceptional care he gave her. She had great confidence in him and would have done what ever he asked because Dr. DeAtkine told me to do it. He helped her physical problems but also was aware and addressed some emotional hurdles she faced while his patient, the biggest being the loss of her husband. I believe will all my heart that she lived longer with a better quality of life because she was a patient of Dr. DeAtkine.
I have been a patient of Dr. DeAtkine's since he became affiliated with MDVIP. He is an exceptional man as well as doctor. He treats my whole person and takes into consideration external factors in my life that affect my health. He is very honest with me and encourages me to make better choices without making me feel guilty or ashamed. He is accessible, encourages me to contact him, and has been there every time I have needed him. He is a spiritual man which is reflected in his caring ways and in how he treats everyone.
Dr. DeAtkine stays abreast of new and changing information in the medical field. He affords his patients new treatments when he thinks it is warranted. He is pro-active and doesn't wait to react to a condition, rather tries to prevent a condition.
I close by saying that a very dear friend of mine was a patient of Dr. DeAtkine's for 5-7 years. She developed immunity problems which led to her death at age 65. During the last 2-3 weeks of her life she was very difficult to reason with, was stubborn and questioned everything about her care. Dr. DeAtkine must have understood her very well as he helped her transition out of this life in a very comfortable, honorable, and peaceful manner. He was at her side when she died and has been affected by her loss. He has helped me with my grief while dealing with his own. What more can one ask of their doctor ?
