Dr. Kuebker took care of my mother during the final nine months of her life. During that time, he took almost daily cell phone calls and texts from me. We experienced a crisis on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve. He took every one of those phone calls without a single moment of hesitation or complaint. We had at least eight ER visits during that time. Dr. Kuebker came to the emergency room for every single one of them. My mother was not readily able to travel in a car. Dr. Kuebker came to her house when she needed to be seen. I had planned a week-long cruise to the Caribbean a year before way before my mother ever got sick. Dr. Kuebker encouraged me not to cancel because my mother was relatively stable at the time of the trip. However, she had a mild stroke while I was at sea. I was literally 36 hours from land when I learned of the episode from the caregiver who had just transported her to the hospital. I literally had no way to get back to San Antonio. Dr. Kuebker called me with regular updates and took every single one of my calls from the ship. He handled every aspect of the problem until I could get home. Those ten months were the worst ten months of my entire life, without question. I say with complete certainty that I could not have kept my mother at home if I had not had Dr. Kuebker. Her condition was simply not such that I could have managed it clawing my way through miles of bureaucracy with some doctor who ran his business more like a Ford assembly plant than a healthcare facility. We confronted several situations during crisis where ER doctors felt compelled to make care recommendations that were basically one-size-fits-all liability reducers for the doc and probably bad for my mother as an individual with an extraordinarily complex medical situation. I remember each time that Dr. Kuebker would veto a treatment he felt was not in my mothers best interest, I would frequently overhear him tell the ER guys he would take responsibility for the decision. He always showed courage, common sense, and compassion. The level of care my mother received from Dr. Kueber was outstanding at every turn, and her quality of life was greatly enriched by the experience. I will be thankful for his help for the rest of my life.
