Back in the early 2000’s I went for my usual mammogram to a local medical center. After the mammogram they said they needed to do a biopsy. They called it a needle biopsy and set the date. Thinking it was a short process My husband and daughter came because we had somewhere else to go after. I’m thinking they stick me a couple times with a needle and I’m on my way. Well what happened is they put me in a mammogram machine and extracted fibers from my breast and layed them out in front of me on a tray!! It was a much longer process than I had anticipated ( it seems like forever) and and I look back on it like a mild human torture! My husband and daughter were wondering why it was taking so long. They finally finished and we went on our way. My husband was planning a cross country trip but waited until we got the results. I got the phone call and they said - “ your preliminary results are negative “ and then they hung up. The word preliminary sounded weird but I heard “negative”. So I told my husband and he left for his trip. A few days later Dr. Cifford called me and said he didn’t like the results and said I should have another biopsy but in a hospital this time. Well it turned out I did have breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy and radiation and am doing fine to this day. I credit my early detection with the thoroughness of Dr. Clifford. As far as I’m concerned he saved my life. Two of my closest friends also had breast cancer and have died so I am thankful for every day I have.
