An A-AH moment with Dr. Jennifer Miller
Dr. Jennifer Miller has been a blessing. I have several occasions where I believe she has saved my life. In 2017, my husband was going through the middle/late stages of Alzheimer's disease. I worked full-time while he went to the Adult Daycare Center in our town. I had to find someone to care for him in the afternoons when the center closed. I had no weekends or holidays “off “, no one to step in to assist, and I thought I could handle anything that came along. I came from a military family of Polish decent and was raised with the “I can do it” attitude. But this was “reality” where death becomes real. I can remember being tired all the time, angry, crying, little sleep and more.
I had an appointment with Dr. Miller in November of that year. She knew as soon as she saw me that I was not doing well at all. After a few questions from her, I started crying and just couldn’t stop. Dr. Miller had discussed in the past about finding a Nursing home for my husband, but I was procrastinating. After checking my labs and more questions, she said to me quite firmly “I am trying to save your life. You are on the verge of a stroke! You need to put your husband in a nursing home now or YOU will be in the nursing home, if you are still alive, and he will have no one to care for him.” I knew she was serious; she had never talked to me like that before. I knew she was right. I had always known she was right, but I was the one being too stubborn and forgot about my own health.
When Doctor Miller looked at me and told me what I needed to hear, she meant it. My mind became clear, today this is called the A-HA moment. It was to save my life.
I am very thankful for Dr. Miller and her wisdom, her commitment to serving others, but most of all, her ability to tell me the hard truth, what I really don't want to hear. Throughout the years, I have had several more A-HA moments with her, and each has helped me with maintaining my quality of life and encouragement to continue to move forward.
