When my daughter-in-law awakened early on a Saturday morning in July 2022, her voice was weak, swallowing was difficult and she had limited movement of her left arm. She and her family were visiting us in Greensboro, NC and were over 1000 miles from their home in Minnesota. I called my MDVIP doctor, Dr. Peter Blomgren, on his cell phone and left a message. In less than an hour on that Saturday morning, Dr. Blomgren returned my call and after a brief conversation, he recommended my daughter-in-law be taken as quickly as possible to a recently opened medical facility because she probably would get faster treatment. He was correct. Upon arrival, she was seen immediately by the medical staff and hospitalized. In my daughter-in-law’s words, “What was meaningful to me is that he used his expertise to anticipate what I might need and clear the path to my getting it. He also helped me to know how my symptoms were presenting and what that would likely mean about what would happen when I got to the hospital. Both were invaluable.” After a few days, my daughter-in-law was able to fly home to Minnesota where she has been under the care of doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. After many tests, she was told that her left vocal cord was paralyzed and that her illness is called idiopathic vocal fold paralysis. After over a year and a half, she has made remarkable progress. Her voice is stronger, there has been substantial improvement in her ability to swallow food and movement of her left arm has mostly returned. And she has been working full time since last December. The purpose of this note is to express gratitude to Dr. Blomgren for his prompt and helpful response to a request for medical attention on a Saturday morning for a family member who was visiting. Dr. Blomgren has unearthed all sorts of things medically that I should have been dealing with for a long time - but the truth is, I was in a state of overwork, stress, and perhaps unexamined acceptance that life is tough and everybody feels tired and deals with some chronic pain. He reminded me that this is not the normal state of being and has encouraged me to seek support and a way through those feelings by connecting me with solutions. Medical students are taught that if they listen to their patients, they will tell you what is wrong with them. The longer I have been a physician, the more I believe this is true. This means understanding not just what a person says, but also what they are trying to say. It no longer surprises me if I ask a patient what their diagnosis is, when they tell me and it turns out to be correct.

The most satisfying part of being a primary care physician is that patients usually come to me first. As a result, I see them with the widest variety of different situations, symptoms and concerns. I know many patients as well as I know close friends. I am in a position to listen to many different types of people from a vast array of backgrounds. It is an extraordinary privilege to not just be able to provide medical care but also to have them share with me their personal experiences. I can think of no other profession that has the advantage of this perspective. It is so excellently interesting and stimulating.

MDVIP has allowed me to continue to practice in a manner where taking time with patients and striving for excellence is rewarded. I want patients to feel satisfied with their care and how they are treated by me and my entire staff. I want them to feel that we have given them the best we have to help them work through an illness or avoid one by prevention. This model supports my relationship with my patients. I can think of nothing more rewarding.

Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
